Fourth Vlog – Interview with Ivan Koljevic

This is my 4th interview with teammate Ivan Koljevic on the bus on our way to a Polish cup game.

Brandon Mcknight – Faithful Traveler

What’s up world! This is Brandon McKnight from South Bend IN, i attended Purdue University and I’m currently playing in Le Havre France. My team name is Le Havre which is about two hours from Paris. I arrived here two weeks ago so everything is still pretty much knew to me. I finally got the deal I wanted in a great league and country, but the process waiting at home got kind of tough at times. I kept my faith in God and he blessed me with a great opportunity to showcase my skills in a great league. This is my sixth season playing professional basketball. I have played in Turkey, Sweden, Israel, and now France. All of these countries are unique in their own way and I have learned a lot by being apart of all the cultures. I learned to speak Turkish fluently after living there for two straight years and believe me its a difficult language to learn.

My team here in Le Havre is currently is sixth place in the league. We are coming off a great win saturday with a layup at the buzzer!! I’m so thankful to be able to take advantage of my gift and getting paid doing it. Its rough sometimes being away from family and friends, but when your pursuing your dream its all worth the ride. You can keep up with me and my team on we are on the hunt to make a big run here. Since i been here we are 2-0 and looking to make it 3-0 before Christmas break. Stay tuned i will be blogging more after we come from break. God Bless world!!

Team Turow – Visits Youth Center!!

Signing Autographs for kids - Photo G. Bereziuk

Socio-threapeutic Center for Youth in the name of Janusz Korczak in Zgorzelec is a multi-function facility covering wide range of work and care for children and teenagers as well as their families. The structure of the center is based on three co-ed groups for 36 kids/teenagers that have to be stationed in the center on full-time basis or as two groups (20 children per group) that are taken care of as a “daily stay” type of visits.

In order to make the grades of kids better and to maximize the number of kids graduating their classes there are made extensive actions in order for schools to adjust their needs to the evaluations made by psychotherapeutic doctors. There are special meetings made with teachers in order to give a full psychological evaluation and full child information. There are also actions made in order to get scholarships for kids. The money is later used to buy books and cover school needs that each of the children has.

The core purposes of the facility is providing help to children who had educational difficulties, used alcohol or drugs and skipped school. The staff of the facility is educated in a way to understand the addiction and work against it. Crucial factor of the help is targeted into teaching children and teenagers about the dangers of alcohol and drug habits.

We are role models in the community and anytime we have the opportunity to put that on display we are welcomed with open arms. The kids in the youth center were extremely enthusiastic about us coming to their center. They were well prepared with chants when we walked into the front door really made us feel special and comfortable. The kids acted out a skit that was very fun, interesting and showed that they put their effort into it.

Team Turow was there to support this youth center and show our faces in the community who really supports our team. We gave out gift bags for all the kids in the program, signed autographs, and interacted with the youths. It really put us in the holiday spirit of giving!

If you are from the Center and you follow please write your comments – both polish and english will be answered by me directly! Jeśli poznaliście mnie w ośrodku i czytacie proszę piszcie do mnie komentarze – zarówno te po Polsku jaki po Angielsku dostana odpowiedzi wprost odemnie!

Game Day Round Up #4 – Turow at Poznan

It is not over until the final buzzer sounds! This was a great game for Turow! Poznan jumped out ahead with an early lead and kept building on it. By halftime they have exploded to take a 40-20 edge into the locker room. We came out very lethargic and did not play with the enthusiasm to match their energy. They played extremely good team basketball and if felt like there was a lid on our basket. We missed easy lay-ups, shot from the outside, and consecutive free throws. Poznan capitalized off of all our mishaps and converted them into baskets. Poznan is a very good team, very talented and was eager for this win.

The game was not over at halftime. Turow kept chipping away at the lead. We stepped up our enthusiasm and sense of urgency. The defense began to rise to the occasion we got stops and held them to 8 points in the 3rd quarter. Suddenly the momentum was shifting in our direction and we kept battling for every possession. All of sudden we are in the fourth quarter with 12 seconds remaining and I come off a high screen and roll with Marko Brkic and he nails a 3 pointer to tie the game!!

Overtime it is in Poznan, after being down by 20 points at halftime we have forced it to go into the extra session. The extra five minutes came down to the last 20 seconds of the game! Poznan takes the lead on a drive and dish by Hawkins to Stelmach. In the next possession I get it on the left wing drive baseline then spin back to the middle of the court I see Bartosz Bochno open in the corner I dish it to him and he sets his feet and hits the shot all net!!! Turow wins by 1 point!!

Patrick Okafor who put on a monster performance with 20 points and 10 rebounds led Poznan. Also in double figures for Poznan was Grzegorz Surmacz with 12 points.

The silent assassin Marko Brkic led Turow with 19 points including 5 triples! Also David Jackson had 16 points and 4 rebounds, I finished with 18 points 9 assists, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals. Bartosz Bochno was the hero of the match with his huge shot to win the game!

What a great effort by Team Turow to pull out this victory. We still had a nice cheering section right behind our bench! The loyal fans that still were cheering even though we were down 20points believed in us and we are very fortunate for your support! Go Turow!
